What design and construction covers
This is the core of civil engineering consulting: turning an approved layout into drawings a contractor can build from, and then making sure the work on site matches them. We handle both halves, which matters more than it sounds — the engineer who did the design is the one best placed to resolve the questions that come up during construction.
Work covers internal and bulk civil services: roads and stormwater, water reticulation, sewer reticulation, bulk earthworks and platform preparation, and the associated structures.
Design deliverables
- Detailed civil design — roads, water, sewer, storm water and earthworks, designed to the requirements of the relevant authority.
- Construction drawings — the full drawing set, including layouts, longitudinal sections, details and schedules.
- Bulk earthworks design — cut and fill design and platform levels, balanced to limit material import and spoil where the site allows.
- Tender documentation and bills of quantities — priced schedules and specifications for competitive tender.
- Technical specifications — the workmanship and materials standards that apply to the works.
Construction-stage services
- Construction supervision — regular site attendance, monitoring progress and quality against the design.
- Quality assurance — checking materials and workmanship, and reviewing test results against the specification.
- Site instructions and technical queries — resolving the conditions that differ from what was assumed at design stage.
- Progress payment certification — measuring and certifying work completed.
- Completion and close-out — snag lists, as-built records and handover to the client or authority.
When you need it
Design work follows once a layout is approved and the servicing approach is settled at planning stage. Construction supervision is generally a condition of approval where services will be handed over to a municipality, and is worth having in any case: the cost of the supervision is routinely smaller than the cost of rectifying work that was not checked as it went in.
